Fredo
While agonizing over a season of creative block, I took an opportunity to save some comics pages out of a few newspapers destined for the recycling bin. Comics are one of those things I didn't realize I missed until I had some again. They carry beautiful nostalgia even when they address recent topics. I realized something though. I realized that while comic books have their own journey, newspaper comics have not evolved in decades. Aside from a few drama or fantasy strips, most comics in a newspaper are short visual jokes. What if a philosophical point of view could be expressed in comic form? I had a few ideas batting around in my mind for a while, so I sketched a character I could use to represent myself interacting in the world. Little did I know, this character would provide deep catharsis for expressing more than philosophical thoughts. Drawing Fredo became a new language where I could express emotions I couldn't reach with poetry at the time. These Fredo drawings continue to change as I have new experiences and now have new, changing, shifting options for expression.
